Susan S said...: Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can affect various parts of the body including the skin, joints, heart, lungs, blood, kidneys and brain. Normally, the body's immune system makes proteins called antibodies that protect the body against viruses, bacteria and other foreign bodies. These foreign materials called antigens.

In an autoimmune disease like lupus, the immune system can not distinguish between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues. The immune system produces antibodies against itself. These antibodies - called "auto-antibodies" (auto means self) - inflammation, pain and damage to various body parts.

For most people, lupus is a mild disease that only a few organs. For others, it can cause serious and even fatal. Although few epidemiological data on lupus, studies suggest that more than 16,000 Americans develop the disease each year.
